An upgrade to the content management software was made on 1 Jan 2003. It was interesting that the site was quite busy on that day, so a few would have had their viewing interrupted.
We now have over 250 registered users. Some of them should make a contribution.
There is now a forum for registered users.
This site first came online on 20 December 2002

Welcome

This site is to assist communication between past students and to enable them to keep in touch with what is now happening at Eltham High School.

Maybe you will be able to renew old school relationships from here.

I hope this is a rewarding visit and that you will return regularly.

If you register and login you will be able to communicate with other registered past students. The personal details you may provide cannot be viewed by other users, but the school may use these to contact you.

The Eltham High School Alumni Organisation is only in its infancy. So is this page. Past students of the school are doing great things around the world and many have kept on contact with their old school.

The school has a great reputation for community involvement and yet our involvement with our own former students leaves room for improvement.

Perhaps the most important starting point is this and the school's website. As a way to keep former students in contact with current school events and achievements, the school website seems a natural place to start.

If past students of Eltham High School register their details here or forward their name, year of graduation, year level reached, current postal address and email address to the school then we will keep in contact and let you know when updates occur to this page. We will also use your information to update our database of past students. More on this later.

You can always catch up with current events at the school through the school newsletter, which is published weekly and is available through the website.

Involvement by Past Students

Some recent events specifically related to past students of the school include:

The Phillip Adams Writing Scholarship

Phillip provided a scholarship to the school in 2000 to promote students writing. The scholarship is presented annually in conjunction with the launch of the annual anthology of Students Writing.

2002 Careers Night

Careers teacher, Julie Buckland, arranged for 44 past students or current parents to present information about their chosen career. This was a highly successful event with some very high quality "role modelling" going on. Current students have been very positive about the opportunity to meet with past students.

Back to School Day 2002

Back-to-School Day on the 2nd of September saw five former students return to speak with classes about their successes. Susan McLean (Year 12 1979), Ryan Trainor (1991). Jennifer Adams (1991), Bronwen Jennings (1994) and Brooke Lazarus (1994) spoke with classes related to their jobs, about their pathways and experiences since leaving school. Susan is with the Police Schools Involvement Program, Jennifer works in the media with Channel 7, Ryan is a business man, Bronwen is a lawyer and Brooke is about to complete her PhD in molecular biology having discovered a new enzyme which might be significant in transplants.

I check back periodically but don;t seem to find a lot. Maybe I am older than I think I am - class of '62. Does anyone have any information about the teachers who had a signigficant influence on my life - June Engish, Don Grant and 'Butch' McKenna?

Other contributions by past students
Last November another EHS past student, my best friend from Eltham State School and EHS was living in London England on an exchange. Living in Canada, I thought we (self and husband) should trot over and visit her and her husband, whom I had not seen since 1967.

After an emotional reunion we got down to the meaty details of sight seeing and decided we should visit Eltham, the name sake of our home town and school....

Events at Eltham High School
We were saddened to learn of the death of Mr Finlay (Finn) Macrae on the 7th October, 2002. Finn was a respected member of the Eltham High School staff from 1955 to 1968, teaching English and History.   Finn's connection to the school continues as he is recognised through the Finn Macrae Prize for Year 8 Debating. Finn's son, Doug, attended Eltham High School and now two grandchildren attend the school and Finn has a close family member on the Eltham High School Council.   Many parents, students and staff will remember Finn's active discussion with former student Phillip Adams when both Finn and Phillip attended the 2000 Anthology Launch in the New Barn at Monsalvat.    Finn is well remembered by his past students and his passing is a sad loss. The thoughts of the school community are with the Macrae family.
